Wordcamp Denver

March 1, 2009

wordcampI attended Wordcamp Denver on Saturday.  I have to admit I really didn’t know what to expect.  I visit Matt Mullenweg’s Blog regularly and from my perspective he was just a young guy that developed some really cool software at the right time.  But, now my perspective is a little different.  The success of Wordpress was no accident.  Matt Mullenweg was very charismatic,  and his speech was very enjoyable.

The other surprise of the morning was Ben Huh.  The guy was amazing!  If you get a chance to watch these two talks on Wordpress.tv it would be worth the time spent.

The afternoon session was in a seperate building and in all honesty it was dissapointing, not because the speakers were terrible, but because there is only so much you can do to make a technical presentation sound up-beat.  I made a mistake attending the technical track - I think the Blogging track would have been more interesting.  However, I will say this…  Alex King’s presentation on the Carrington theme was very well done, and he conviced me that it would be a great framework to use.  I plan on downloading Carrington and playing around a bit.

It was also interesting to listen to three different perspectives of Open Souce Licensing; Matt Mullenweg, Steve O’Grady, and Joe Hildebrand.  I came away from the discussion with the new realization of how many different opinions there are on the issue.  Very confusing….

I also hooked up with an old friend while I was at the conference.  We worked together once upon a time at Amercian Express.  In a previous life we were both Enterprise Software Guys.  I had no idea he was a Blogger.  It was a great surprise bumping into him.  If you get a chance check out his Blog - Solo Technology.

All in all it was a good day.  I will definately attend again next year.
