I now have 3 laptop computers; a Sony Vio with Microsoft, an IBM with xubuntu, and a Mac Book Pro. I wanted to be able to develop applications for all 3 platforms, so I began investigating new Software Development Environments. The two environments that I continued to run across in my research were Real Basic and Adobe Flex.
I personally have no Basic experience at all. On top of that - the older I get the less I like Microsoft, and right or wrong, when I think of Basic I think about Microsoft. I also think that mxml and xml are very simple to learn, compared to another full blown language like basic. The other thing I like about Flex is that you can create apps for the iphone, this may also be possible with Real Basic, but if so, it is not advertised.
In short, one of my New Year resolutions is to learn a new Cross Platform Language and as of right now that choice is Adobe Flex. I have now downloaded the Flex Plugin for all 3 of my systems, it is suppose to be easy to plugin to Eclipse. So far I have not gotten the Flex Plugin to work on any of the three platforms. The thing I find most troubling about this is the lack of easily accessible information on the topic. I do have Flex Builder working on the Mac, but I cannot get the Adobe Flex Plugin working with Eclipse.
For the time being I am going to continue to learn Flex, just using the Flex Builder development environment on my Mac. I will attend the Rocky Mountain User Group meeting next month and see if I can pick up any tips. I have found several Blog “How To’s” on the topic, but now one of them has worked.
Anyway, as I study this topic I will continue to Blog about the topic.
